More Tankless Water Heater Info
Sizing up a tankless water heater is an important first step. The best way is to determine the number of faucets that could be running simultaneously. Keep in mind that instant hot water heaters need no recovery time - hot water supply is limited only by rate of flow. This can be determined by measuring the difference between ground water and at-the-faucet temperature. The greater the difference, the less hot water flow. Home models usually produce 2-5 gals per minute, depending on the temperature difference. These two calculations can be easily made with a watch and digital thermometer. There are certain installation requirements that are unique to tankless hot water heaters. For electric models there is the need for high electrical power, which could exceed the output of an existing home circuit panel - a question that an electrician can answer. Gas tankless heaters can be even more costly because of extra installation features. The need for a bigger gas line and a specific type of exhaust vent can make start-up costs more than the average heater. For some, hot water tankless water heaters can be considered a DIY project. I don't know of any gas powered models that permit this but many electric models allow this or fail to mention the requirement in their warranty.
